Project Background
In late 1998, BP merged with Amoco and at the time was the largest corporate merger in history. The key to achieving the perceived benefits was in completing transition and transformation of the new combined entity into a streamlined single set of business processes as soon as possible. Transformation of the IT tools, applications and underlying IT infrastructure were the critical means to achieve this aim. And with little more than 12 months before y2k became a reality, the significance of devising a strategy and project plan, then executing perfectly across the globe within a short time frame was huge.
Robs role was to guide the global assessment and decision making that ultimately led to a decision to implement BP's Common Operating Environment. Then to provide clear guidance and assistance to multiple global business teams as they considered which of the application systems to retain or discard.
Once the direction was clear, Rob returned to Asia where he lead the migration of core IT systems infrastructure for every Amoco site in Asia Pacific to complete without business interruption prior to the December y2k deadline. Under Robs leadership, the Asia Pacific migration, covering over 20 countries and many more sites was completed ahead of schedule and well within budget.
